The Environmental Calculator

We all know that using recycled paper makes a difference by conserving the earths resources. But judging that difference on individual jobs isn’t so easy and that can make explaining the environmental option a little bit harder.

Our environmental calculator shows the precise difference using Arjowiggins Graphic recycled paper makes in terms of a reduction in:

  • Water usage
  • CO2 and Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Energy
  • Wood
  • Landfill

In comparison to virgin fibre grades – in detail and for your specific job.

Data from Arjowiggins Graphic

Landfill: savings made by recovering waste paper instead of it being sent to incineration or landfill. This calculation takes into account the entire de-inking process.

At the end of its life, paper that is either sent to landfill or incineration produces greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide or methane) during its deterioration. Methane is proved to be 25 times more noxious than carbon dioxide as regards to greenhouse gas effects. This is the reason why it is essential to recycle and give paper a second life.

icone-CO2CO2 emissions savings:. The difference between the emissions produced when manufacturing a specific virgin fibre paper compared to the manufacture of a specific recycled paper.

The carbon footprint is evaluated by Labelia Conseil in accordance with the Bilan Carbone® methodology. Calculations are based on a comparison between the chosen recycled paper and the virgin fibre paper according to the latest European BREF data available (virgin fibre paper). The results are obtained according to technical information and subject to modifications.

CO2 emissions equivalent savings: These are translated into kilometres with the calculation based on a lower-end car: 100 g CO2 / Km.

Water savings: The comparison between the water consumption used to produce a specific virgin fibre paper and the water consumption needed to produce a specific recycled paper. (Sources: BREF data).

Energy savings. The comparison between the energy consumption used to produce a specific virgin fibre paper and the energy consumption needed to produce a specific recycled paper.

Wood consumptions savings: The savings made by using recovered waste paper instead of virgin fibres.

Finally the results are calculated by taking in consideration the savings for 1 tonne of recycled paper compared with 1 tonne of virgin fibre based paper. This also takes into account the level of ash and fibre.

The environmental calculator in practice:

  • Select the paper, the grammage, and number of sheets required for the cover and the pages for your specific print job.
  • Select the size and type in the quantity of your specific print job.

The environmental calculator gives you instantaneous results clearly showing the precise environmental benefit for any job you choose to print on recycled paper These results are also available in PDF format.
