Arjowiggins Graphic has finalized with CCB the contract to build a 60 MW biomass cogeneration unit at its Besse sur Braye paper mill site, France.

Arjowiggins Graphic (AWG) has finalized with CCB, a joint Dalkia France-Cofely subsidiary, the contract to build a 60 MW biomass cogeneration unit at its Besse sur Braye paper mill site, France. The unit will consume 200 000T per annum of waste wood materials to provide all the steam required by the mill and generate electricity for the national French electricity provider, EDF. The project, under discussion for 2 years and selected by the French government as part of the CRE4 program of the ministry of Environment in September 2011, is now ready to start its operational phase and is scheduled for completion during the second half of 2014.

The Besse paper mill, with a capacity of 320 000 tons, is the main production site of AWG. It principally produces high white recycled papers under the well-known brands of Cocoon™,Satimat green™ and Maine gloss green™, as well as CWF and UWF papers from FSC certified virgin pulp under the also well-known brand MCS™.

“This 60 million Euro’s project is another major building block of AWG’s Manufacturing strategy. It clearly supports our current and long term Business strategy to offer the Printing & Writing industry a unique and complete range of papers meeting the growing demand for papers with a low environmental footprint. The Besse mill will see its CO2 emissions divided by 5 times and the green electricity produced will increase the share of renewable energy” said Agnes Roger, AWG chief executive.

The waste wood materials will be sourced locally, supporting the active management of local forests and contributing to their sustainable growth while generating about 60 permanent jobs in logging, transportation, biomass supply chain, as well as power plant operation.

Gilles Lhermitte, AWG’s sustainable development director said: “We are focusing on being best in class in the management of our environmental impact. We are proud to report that our efforts and actions have been recognized by the WWF, 2011 environmental index, where AWG has been ranked number one among the Fine papers producers. We have also embarked the WWF Climate savers program and this project will be a key contributor to our official commitment to reduce our greenhouse emissions by 10% in 2014 for each ton of paper produced”.

Arjowiggins Graphic to increase the capacity of its Greenfield mill, specialized in the production of high whiteness recycled pulp

Arjowiggins is investing €1.5 million in the debottlenecking of its Greenfield deinked pulp mill located at Chateau Thierry east of Paris. The mill produces an extensive range of white and extra-white deinked pulp (whiteness between 82-100), mainly used in the manufacture of premium quality white recycled papers serving the printing and writing industry.

The year-long investment project will increase the mill’s capacity by 25,000 tonnes, reaching 150,000 tonnes by the end of 2012.

The first phase of the work began in January and is expected to come on stream at the end of June.

Currently the mills output satisfies demand from Arjowiggins Graphic mills for their production of premium quality, extra-white recycled papers under the well-known brands Cocoon™, Maine Gloss Green™ and Satimat Green™. In addition the needs of external customers in the printing & writing and specialty papers sectors are also served.

This capacity increase underlines the strong commitment of Arjowiggins Graphic to fulfil the growing needs of the European graphic sector for premium recycled pulps and it is a stated objective of the Company to ensure a fair balance between pulp volumes consumed by its own mills and pulp available to external customers.

The fast growth of its in-house demand has led Arjowiggins to activate the Greenfield capacity increase as of this year. If trends in European demand warrant it, a further, more ambitious capacity increase is planned for 2013.

ARJOWIGGINS GRAPHIC PRODUCTS IN WWF PAPER DATABASE

On January 31st, Gilles Lhermitte (Sustainable Development Manager – Arjowiggins Graphic) attended the WWF launch of a global benchmarking tool for pulp and paper products at PaperWorld in Frankfurt, Germany.

Check Your Paper is an online database to help paper buyers find products with the lowest environmental impact. The tool rates the environmental quality of the paper-making process for a given product, including how well forests supplying fibre are managed, use of recycled fibre, fossil CO2 emissions, waste going to landfills and water pollution from mills.

Paper products posted on the official list have been audited by third-party certification bodies to ensure high credibility.

Check Your Paper at the same time allows pulp and paper manufacturers to voluntarily rate and post their products’ environmental impacts online. You can view the Arjowiggins Graphic papers environmental performance at: http://checkyourpaper.panda.org/

All the Arjowiggins Graphic products submitted achieved ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ results and were measured out of a possible 100. Cyclus and Eural were rated ‘excellent’ while Cocoon, Maine gloss green, Satimat green and MCS (Maine gloss, Chromomat and Satimat) were rated ‘good’.

“We believe this new database will help paper buyers choose the most environmentally friendly papers on the market. WWF invites all paper buyers to check the tool before purchasing and encourage other paper-makers to join Check Your Paper,” says Rodney Taylor, Forest Director, WWF International.

“We encourage transparency and are delighted that WWF have given buyers the opportunity to see how products perform when looking at the environmental quality of the paper-making process for a given product. All our papers in Check Your Paper were rated excellent or good, emphasising that environmental responsibility is at the heart of the Arjowiggins Graphic approach.” Gilles Lhermitte, Sustainable Development Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic.

Globally, paper consumption is on the rise, with an expected increase from the current rate of 400 million tons annually to 450-500 million tons by 2020. Without a higher standard of environmental performance across the industry, this level of consumption will leave an unacceptably large environmental impact on the planet.

In order to earn the maximum five stars in WWF’s Check Your Paper, the paper product shall have:

positive impacts on forests, and contain high proportions of post-consumer recycled fibre and/or

virgin fibre originating from credibly certified, well managed forests.

reduced contributions to climate change through use of recycled fibre, responsible forest management and

minimising CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in the manufacturing process, and, indirectly, emissions of CO2 and methane from degrading waste in landfills

close to zero water pollution through reduction of organic water pollution and

reduced water pollution from bleaching, through promotion of unbleached or totally chlorine-free bleached products.

ARJOWIGGINS GRAPHIC ANNOUNCES FUTURE BUSINESS STRATEGY

The business will focus on the development of cutting edge green coated and uncoated recycled papers, which provide consistent high quality and excellent performance for customers. In particular Arjowiggins Graphic will target printers, designers and end users with increased awareness of the environmental agenda and its impact on businesses.

Commenting on the launch, Christophe Andre, Vice President of Arjowiggins and General Manager of Arjowiggins Graphic, says, "Driven by product development, advanced manufacturing techniques and customer-focused management we believe we have created a new offer within Arjowiggins with strong future growth potential. Capitalising on demand for recycled and FSC® certified stocks, which do not compromise on quality, we will combine our long-standing heritage in paper manufacturing with the latest technologies and approaches."

To achieve this, Arjowiggins Graphic has unveiled a strategy based on three key elements:

Product innovation - Set up to anticipate and respond to customer needs, the branch will operate within reduced timings for product development. Typically the creation of a new paper takes between 12-18 months but Arjowiggins Graphic will target a 3-month maximum development period. This will ensure it is able to utilise the very latest in green technologies and continually develop cutting edge environmental papers. It will also be the first manufacturer to provide environmental declarations for products including information such as carbon footprint, energy consumption and water consumption to ensure transparency with customers.

Manufacturing - The new branch will be supported by an extensive manufacturing network with mills at Besse-sur-Braye, Wizernes, Le Bourray and Odense (Dalum - the most environmental paper mill in the world). There will also be de-inking pulp manufacturing at Greenfield S.A.S., Le Bourray and Maglemolle (Dalum). At Greenfield S.A.S., the company is pioneering a unique process to produce de-inked pulp (of which 20% - 30% comes from UK waste thus reducing landfill). This is used to manufacture quality recycled grades with varying levels of de-inked pulp (15% - 100%) which offer outstanding levels of whiteness only previously experienced with virgin fibres. Across its mills Arjowiggins Graphic is also reducing carbon emissions where possible.

Route to market - The branch will maximise existing relationships with a network of leading merchants in the UK in the distribution of its products. Key target sectors for Arjowiggins Graphic include general advertising, marketing and printing and it will partner with a number of merchants including Antalis, Elliott Baxter, Robert Horne and The Paper Company for the distribution of its products. A key account manager will be assigned to each major merchant acting as the interface between Arjowiggins Graphic and its customers.
